The Begonia Maui Mist, ‘Begonia rex hybrids’, a Great American Cities Gäó Begonias, are grown for their colorful textured leaves. The Maui Mist has red colored leaves with light green markings. Very attractive! The Rex Begonias are kings of the Begonia World, that’s why they are called Rex because that in Latin means king. These type of begonias display wildly varied leaves streaked, bordered, spotted, and splotched by many colors. They also flower, but usually the flowers are overshadowed by the striking foliage. The growth habit of Rex begonias is mounding and compact in nature. Hanging baskets suit the plant’s requirement for good air circulation. Lower light and cooler temperatures will really bring out the color in Rex begonias leaves and high light will cause all colors to fade. The soil must be well drained. For zones 9-11, this plant can also be a perennial.

If, as a gardener, you have never owned or used a Greenhouse, I would recomend that you do so. Even if you feel that the cost of heating a Greenhouse or indeed the cost of green house kits is too prohibitive, a cold greenhouse is still very useful indeed. A cold greenhouse is really a technical term. It means that the greenhouse is not heated in winter. Also, other than by using shading and ventilation it is not artificially cooled in the high summer.
You can greatly increase the number and type of plants you can grow with the use of a cold greenhouse. Greenhouse gardening need not be expensive. Even without the use of artificial heating it will protect tender plants from the wind and you can extend the growing season because of the heat that is stored from the early and late summer sunshine.Hence the cold greenhouse will extend the growing seasin over that you can achieve outside; You can also grow plants for which the normal outdoor season is not long enough, such as melons and peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes.
Instead of going out and buying bedding plants, you can easily germinate and raise seeds in the cold greenhouse in large enough numbers that you will have plenty to sell or share with friends and neighbours.
Taking cuttings and raising them is often easier in the greenhouse, although many cuttings are better raised outdors in shaltered areas, as greenhouses do tend to become rather warm in the summer.
Sweet corn seed needs warmth to germinate (as do many other seed including tomatoes) so sowing them in a cold greenhouse helps no end. By getting an early start in the greenhouse you effectively extend the growing season. And remember, As every gardener knows, sweet corn cooked within minutes of harvesting, tastes so much better than those bought fresh or frozen. You can (and if you are a keen gardener probably have) raised seeds on your window sills. The problem is that the plants become impossibly ‘leggy’ before you are ready to put them outside. Because the light comes from all round them in a greenhouse, this does not happen.
So please give it a try. You will get so much more enjoyment from it just as I have, and your gardening abilities will be greatly extended. So build a greenhouse now.
