Honeysuckle - Harlequin, Lonicera periclymenum 'Harlequin', is a variegated deciduous vine that produces leaves with two shades of green with creamy white margins. These leaves brighten to hot pink in the fall. Red stems hold wonderfully scented flowers of pale rose purple with a cream tip. Harlequin's flowers last all summer long and often into fall, but the foliage is just as interesting as the flowers, so Harlequin's fall foliage color adds additional charm. Indifferent to heat and humidity, it's the one you want for those dry, difficult spots. Let it scramble across the ground in areas where few other things will grow -- its vining habit can be horizontal as easily as vertical! If trained on a trellis, Harlequin needs to be tied to a vertical stake at planting time for support as it grows. It prefers sun to light shade.

Honeysuckle - Blanche Sandman, Lonicera sempervirens 'Blanche Sandman', is an exceptionally long and profusely flowering variety that requires support in order to climb. Its stems are often red to purple, turning greenish brown with age. Leaves are rounded and opposite. The unscented, typical honeysuckle-shaped flowers are very showy, with an orange-red exterior and yellow-orange throat. The hummingbirds love it! Plant it in a compost-rich, moisture retentive soil. Not picky about soil, but does not do well in standing water. Give full sun for best flowering, but provide afternoon shade in areas with very hot summers. Let your creative side take over and use this fast-growing native beauty on a fence, trellis or other garden feature.

The Tree Peony Kamata-nishiki, 'Paeonia', is named for the famous tapestries woven in the Kamata province. The flower is double wisteria blue with lighter edges. Every garden needs a tree peony. There was a time, many years ago in ancient China, when the only person who could own a tree peony was the Emperor himself. We're not sure what the penalty was for infringing this law, but it can't have been very pleasant. Fortunately for us, tree peonies are now slightly more available. There are very few plants that can compete with a tree peony in full bloom. A mature plant can have in excess of a hundred flowers and these can be 10" or more across! Japanese tree peonies tend to have less double flowers than their Chinese peers, and the flowers are more open and delicate. Growing only 4-5' tall, these exceptional Tree Peonies are sub-zero hardy and bloom for a lifetime.

The Yellow Trumpet Creeper, Campsis radicans 'Flava', is a rapid growing, clinging vine produces yellow trumpet shaped flowers in the summer months that attract hummingbirds. Trumpet Creepers flower best in a full sun location and it is a tough vine for hot and dry sites. The invasive nature of this plant makes it hard to get rid of but also very hardy. The abundant sprays of trumpet-shaped yellow flowers cover this deciduous vine for an extra long bloom season. The rapid growth makes training easy and therefore it is excellent for covering fences or arbors. The 'Flava' cultivar is considered by many to be the superior of the species.
